A pre-roll pack is a box, tin or tube holding several pre-rolls, usually two to ten, sold as one unit. Most packs hold mini pre-rolls of 0.35 to 0.5 grams, so a 5-pack is about 2.5 grams of flower and a 10-pack is 3.5 grams, the same as an eighth. Packs have become the largest-selling pre-roll format in most licensed markets because they're cheaper per gram than singles and each joint is a manageable dose. Here's how the sizes, counts and packaging formats break down.
Why mini pre-rolls exist
A full 1g joint is more than most people want in one sitting. It gets put out and relit, which tastes bad, or it's shared. A 0.35g or 0.5g mini burns in five to eight minutes and is finished. That fits how people actually consume, and it's the reason "dog walker" size pre-rolls took off: enough for a walk around the block.
For the brand, minis also use smalls and trim that would otherwise be sold cheaply as bulk, and they command a higher price per gram than an eighth of flower. A 10-pack of 0.35g minis at $35 is $10 a gram; the same flower loose sells for $6 to $8.
Standard sizes
0.35g mini. Rolled in a 70mm or 84mm cone. The most common multipack size. Ten of them is exactly 3.5g.
0.5g half. 84mm or 98mm cone. Five of them is 2.5g, six is 3g.
0.75g. Less common. Used in premium 4-packs and 5-packs.
1g full. 98mm or 109mm cone. Usually sold as singles, sometimes in 2-packs or 3-packs.
Pack counts follow the arithmetic: 10 x 0.35g, 7 x 0.5g and 5 x 0.7g all land at 3.5g, which is the eighth-ounce weight most states use as a retail unit and the number consumers already know.
Pack formats and packaging
Slide box or tuck carton. A folding carton, usually with a child-resistant feature such as a push-pull sleeve or a locking tab. Holds 5 to 10 minis lying flat or standing. The cheapest multipack, printable on every face, and the format most dispensaries stock. Cost per unit is typically $0.30 to $0.80 at a few thousand pieces, and options are in pre-roll boxes.
Tin. A hinged or slip-lid metal tin, usually with a child-resistant mechanism or sold inside a CR outer. Reusable, feels premium, keeps pre-rolls from crushing. $0.60 to $1.50. Popular for 5-packs and 7-packs.
Multi-tube. A single wide plastic tube holding 2 to 5 pre-rolls upright. Child-resistant push-and-turn cap. Cheap and smell-proof but not much room to print.
Rigid box. A two-piece or magnetic box with a fitted insert, one slot per pre-roll. This is the gift and premium format, $1.50 to $4 per unit. See luxury pre-roll packaging.
Pouch. A mylar pouch with a child-resistant zipper, pre-rolls loose or in a tray inside. Cheapest per unit, best barrier, weakest presentation. Common for value packs and in markets that require opaque exit packaging anyway.
What a pack needs to do
Keep the joints straight. Minis in a loose box rattle and crack. A carton needs an insert, a tin needs a fitted tray, or the pre-rolls need to be packed tight.
Stay child-resistant. Every licensed state requires it for the retail unit. A carton with a CR sleeve, a tin with a CR lock or a CR pouch all pass; a plain slide box does not. Details in child-resistant packaging.
Hold humidity. Ten small pre-rolls dry out faster than one big one because there's more surface area. A humidity pack inside the tin or carton, or a sealed inner pouch, keeps them smokeable for months rather than weeks. See how long do pre-rolls last.
Carry the label. State-mandated warnings, THC content, batch, and a scannable code take space. A 5-pack tin lid is tight; a carton has room.
Pricing packs
Packs are priced as a discount to singles per gram but a premium to loose flower. Typical licensed-market retail:
2-pack of 0.5g: $12 to $20.
5-pack of 0.5g: $25 to $45.
7-pack of 0.5g: $30 to $55.
10-pack of 0.35g: $25 to $50.
Infused packs run 30 to 60 percent above those. The full breakdown is in how much do pre-rolls cost.
For brands: choosing a pack format
Start with the count and weight that lands on 3.5g, because that's the unit consumers compare against. Then pick the cheapest packaging that keeps the pre-rolls straight and passes child-resistant testing in your state, which is usually a tuck carton with an insert and a CR sleeve. Move to tins or rigid boxes for a premium line once the first format is selling. The full range and minimums are in custom pre-roll packaging.
Quick answers
How many pre-rolls are in a pack? Usually 2, 5, 7 or 10. Ten 0.35g minis or seven 0.5g halves equal 3.5g, the standard eighth.
How much is a mini pre-roll? 0.35g to 0.5g. A "dog walker" is typically 0.35g.
Why are pre-roll packs cheaper per gram than singles? Packaging and labour are spread across several joints, and packs often use smalls rather than whole buds.
What packaging do pre-roll packs come in? Child-resistant tuck cartons, tins, multi-tubes, rigid boxes or CR pouches. Cartons are the most common.
Do pre-roll packs dry out? Faster than singles, because small joints have more surface area. Packs with a humidity pack or sealed inner pouch last months.
