Child-Resistant Packaging
In a licensed cannabis market, child-resistant packaging isn't a nice-to-have, it's the law, and "child-resistant" only means something if the package has actually been tested. Ours has. Every certified format we sell comes with its CPSC 16 CFR 1700.20 test documentation, so you can show an inspector rather than tell them.
Request a quoteThe test behind the label
The US standard is CPSC 16 CFR 1700.20. A package passes when a panel of children aged 42 to 51 months mostly can't open it within the test period, and a panel of adults aged 50 to 70 mostly can. It's a real test with real kids, run by an accredited lab, and it produces a report with a lot number on it. That report is what "certified" means.
Plenty of packaging is sold as "CR-style" or "child-resistant design" with no report behind it. It might be fine. It might not. If a state inspector asks for the documentation and there isn't any, that's your problem, not the supplier's. So ask for the report before you order. We send ours on request, for every certified line.

Three things to check
Certified, or just CR-style?
Ask for the test report. If the answer is a brochure, it isn't certified.
Does your state accept the outer package?
Some states accept a CR carton with non-CR items inside. Others want the primary container to be CR. Check before you commit to a format.
Airtight is a separate spec
A CR closure keeps children out. It doesn't always keep air out. If freshness matters, ask about both.
Child-resistant packaging FAQ
Is child-resistant packaging required for cannabis?
In every US state with a licensed market, yes, for the retail package. The exact rule (primary container or outer package, exit bag or not) varies by state.
What's the difference between child-resistant and tamper-evident?
Child-resistant means tested so young children can't open it. Tamper-evident means it's obvious if it has been opened. Most states want both, and they're different features.
Can you send the test documentation?
Yes. Every certified line we sell has a CPSC 16 CFR 1700.20 report and we send it on request, before you order if you like.
Do you make custom printed CR packaging?
Yes. Certified boxes, bags and cartons can all be printed with your artwork. Minimums start at 2,000 units for pre-roll boxes and 5,000 for everything else.
Need certified packaging with the paperwork?
Tell us the product and your state. We'll match the format and send the report.
