How long do pre-rolls last?
Short answer: a pre-roll in a standard pop-top tube is at its best for about two to four weeks. In an airtight tube with a humidity pack, kept out of light and heat, most hold up for three to six months. Past that they don't become unsafe, they just get dry, harsh and weaker. The wrapper is only part of it; what matters is how much air, light and heat get to the flower.
What actually happens to a pre-roll over time
Ground flower has far more surface area than a whole bud, so everything that degrades cannabis happens faster in a pre-roll.
Moisture leaves. Flower is usually packed at around 55 to 62 percent relative humidity. In dry air it drops below that within days, and once it's below 50 percent the roll burns hot and tastes like paper.
THC turns into CBN. Air and light slowly convert THC into CBN, which is more sedating and less potent. You can't see this happening, but a six-month-old pre-roll stored badly can lose a noticeable share of its THC.
Terpenes evaporate. The smell goes first. A pre-roll that has lost its aroma has usually lost a lot of its flavour too.
Mould, rarely. This is the opposite problem. If a pre-roll is sealed while too wet, or stored somewhere humid, mould can grow. That one is a safety issue, and it's the only reason to throw a pre-roll out rather than just smoke a weaker one.

Those ranges assume the pre-roll was fresh and properly dried when it was packed. Old flower rolled into a new tube is still old flower.
Do pre-rolls expire?
Not in the way food does. There's no date after which a pre-roll becomes unsafe to smoke, unless it has mould. What people mean by "expired" is that it's dry, harsh, weak and doesn't smell like much. That's a quality problem, and it's a gradual one.
If a pack has a printed date, that's usually the packaging or harvest date required by the state, not a use-by date. A year past that date in a sealed, humidity-controlled tube is often still decent. A month past it in a warm car is not.
How to tell a pre-roll has gone bad
It crumbles. Roll it gently between your fingers. Fresh flower has a little give. Dry flower sounds like dry leaves.
No smell, or a hay smell. Terpenes are gone. If it smells like a barn, it's very old.
Harsh, hot burn. Dry rolls burn fast and scratch the throat.
White fuzz or dark spots. That's mould. Don't smoke it.
A dry pre-roll can be brought back a little by sealing it with a humidity pack for a day or two. Mould can't.
How to keep pre-rolls fresh longer
Keep them sealed. Air is the main enemy. Once a tube is open, the clock runs faster.
Add a humidity pack. A small two-way pack in the tube or the jar holds the flower at the right moisture. This single thing roughly doubles usable shelf life.
Keep them dark and cool. Not the fridge, which is too humid, and not the glovebox, which is too hot. A drawer is fine.
Don't squash them. A bent pre-roll cracks the paper and lets air in along the whole length.
If you're the one packaging them
For dispensaries and brands, most of the shelf-life complaints we hear come back to the closure, not the flower. A pop-top tube looks sealed but isn't. If your pre-rolls sit on a shelf or in a delivery bag for more than a couple of weeks, an airtight tube with a humidity pack is the difference between a repeat customer and a refund.
Two things worth knowing when you're choosing tubes:
Airtight and child-resistant are different specs. Some certified child-resistant closures seal well, some don't. Ask for both, and ask which one you're actually getting.

If you're packaging in-house, humidity packs are cheap enough to put in every tube.
