A hash hole is a pre-roll with a rope of hash rosin running through the centre of the flower. As it burns, the rosin melts and drips inward, so the ash forms a hollow tube around the rosin core. That hollow is the "hole". Hash holes are the most potent pre-roll format on the market, usually 1.5 to 3.5 grams, and they sell for $40 to $120. Here's how they're made, how they differ from other infused pre-rolls, and what to look for.
Where hash holes came from
The format came out of Los Angeles around 2020, credited to Fidel's, a hash brand that rolled full-gram rosin ropes into large joints for events. It spread through the rosin scene because it solved a real problem: rosin is expensive and messy to smoke on its own, and a hash hole packages a dab's worth of it into something you can light with a lighter.
By 2023 most premium flower brands in California, Michigan and Colorado had a hash hole line, and the term is now used loosely for any pre-roll with a solid hash core, whether or not it's rosin.
How a hash hole is built
Flower is ground coarse. Fine grind chokes the airflow once the rosin melts.
A rope of hash rosin is rolled by hand, about 3 to 5mm thick and the length of the joint. Rosin has to be the right consistency for this, firm enough to hold shape at room temperature. Cold-cure batter works; very sappy rosin doesn't.
The rope is placed in the centre of the paper and flower is packed around it. The rope has to stay centred or the joint burns unevenly.
The joint is rolled, usually as a cone with a glass or paper tip, and sealed. Most are 1.5g to 3.5g total, of which 0.5g to 1g is rosin.
This is hand work. Nobody has automated it well, which is why hash holes cost what they cost and why brands sell them in small batches.
Hash holes vs other infused pre-rolls
There are three ways to infuse a pre-roll, and they behave differently.
Hash hole. A solid rosin core. The rosin melts inward, the flower burns around it. Very strong, slow-burning, and the flavour is dominated by the rosin.
Kief-coated or kief-mixed. Kief dusted on the outside or blended into the ground flower. Cheaper, more even burn, moderate boost in potency. This is the "infused" pre-roll most dispensaries sell.
Distillate-injected. Liquid distillate injected into the flower. Consistent potency, but the flavour is flat and it can run and burn unevenly. Common in mass-market packs.
The general infused category is covered in what are infused pre-rolls and are they worth it. Hash holes are the top end of it.
How strong are they
A 2g hash hole with 0.7g of 75 percent THC rosin and 1.3g of 25 percent flower contains roughly 850mg of THC. A standard 1g pre-roll has about 200 to 250mg. So a hash hole is three to four times the THC of a regular joint, in a package that takes 30 to 60 minutes to finish. Almost nobody smokes one alone in a sitting. They're built for sharing, which is part of why they're sold at events and as gifts.
How to smoke one
Light it slowly and rotate, so the paper catches evenly before the rosin starts to melt. Draw gently. A hard pull on a hash hole pulls melted rosin into the airway and the joint tightens up. If it does clog, let it cool for a minute and re-light. Expect the ash to hold together in a long tube; that's the hole forming. Put it out by pressing the tip into a hard surface rather than pinching, so the rosin core doesn't smear.
What to look for when buying
Rosin, not resin. Hash rosin is solventless. "Live resin" is a butane or propane extract. Both make a hash hole, but rosin is what the format was built on and what commands the price. The label should say which.
Weight breakdown. A good label states flower weight and hash weight separately. "2g infused" tells you nothing.
Fresh. Rosin degrades. A hash hole more than three or four months old will taste flatter. Check the packaging date.
A glass tip. Not essential, but it keeps the end from getting gummy with rosin and lets you finish the joint.
Packaging a hash hole
Hash holes are long, heavy and fragile, and the rosin core softens in heat. They need a rigid tube or a fitted carton with an insert, not a soft bag. Most brands use a glass tube with a cork or a child-resistant cap inside a printed box, both for protection and because a $60 product needs to look like one. The format options are in luxury pre-roll packaging, and the child-resistant requirement that applies in every licensed state is in cannabis packaging regulations.
Quick answers
What is a hash hole? A pre-roll with a rope of hash rosin through the centre. The rosin melts as it burns, leaving a hollow tube in the ash.
How much does a hash hole cost? $40 to $120 depending on size and the rosin used. Most are 1.5g to 3.5g.
How strong is a hash hole? Three to four times the THC of a normal 1g pre-roll. A 2g hash hole can hold 700 to 900mg of THC.
Is a hash hole the same as an infused pre-roll? It's one type. Most infused pre-rolls use kief or distillate. A hash hole uses a solid rosin core, which is stronger and more expensive.
Why is it called a hash hole? Because the ash burns into a tube around the melting rosin core, leaving a visible hole.
