Are mylar bags smell-proof? (And safe, reusable and recyclable?)
Short answer: a properly heat-sealed mylar bag is close to smell-proof. A mylar bag that's only zipped shut is not; the zipper lets a little air through and the smell follows within a day or two. The film itself is food-safe and not toxic at normal temperatures, most bags are reusable as long as the zipper still works, and almost none of them are curbside recyclable because they're a laminate of several materials.
Why mylar blocks smell (and when it doesn't)
Smell is just molecules escaping into the air. To block it you need a material that gas can't pass through, and a seal with no gaps.
Mylar bags are built from layers: polyester on the outside, a metallised layer in the middle, and polyethylene on the inside. The metallised layer is the one that stops oxygen, light and odour getting through the wall of the bag. It's the same reason a bag of coffee doesn't smell until you open it.
The wall is fine. The weak point is the opening.
Heat seal: the inner layers are melted together, so there's no path out. Smell-proof for practical purposes.
Zipper only: the zipper tracks are pressed together, not fused. Air moves through slowly. Fine for a day, not for a week in a car.
Cheap or thin bags: below about 3.5 mil the metallised layer can be thin enough to let some odour through even when sealed.
So if you're asking "are mylar bags smell-proof" because you're carrying something, the answer is: sealed yes, zipped mostly, folded over no. If you're asking as a business, the answer is: heat seal every bag you sell.
Are mylar bags toxic or safe for food?
The inner layer that touches the product is food-grade polyethylene, the same plastic as a sandwich bag. Bags sold for food or cannabis are made to FDA food-contact standards, and the metallised layer is sealed away from the contents. At room temperature nothing migrates into the product.
The things that change that:
Heat. Don't microwave them or store them somewhere hot. The polyethylene isn't meant for cooking temperatures.
Unknown sources. A no-name bag from a marketplace listing may not be food-grade film. Buy from a supplier who'll tell you the film spec.
Damaged bags. A scratch through the inner layer exposes the metallised layer. Toss those.
"Mylar" is a brand name for a type of polyester film, so the word gets used loosely. What matters is the layer structure, not the name on the box.
Are mylar bags reusable?
Yes, with a caveat. The zipper is designed to open and close many times, so a stock bag can be refilled as long as the zipper still holds and the inside is clean. Wipe it, let it dry, use it again.
The heat seal is single-use. Once you cut below it there's less film at the top, so you can reseal a couple of times at most before you run out of headroom. For anything you're selling, use a fresh bag with a fresh seal every time.
Are mylar bags recyclable?
Mostly no, not at the curb. A mylar bag is three materials bonded together, and municipal recycling can't separate them, so they're sorted as waste even if you put them in the blue bin. That's true of most snack and coffee packaging too.
Two real options:
Mail-in programs. Some specialist programs accept multi-layer flexible packaging. They exist, but they're small and you'll pay to ship.
Mono-material bags. A newer style of barrier bag made from a single plastic, which some curbside systems will take. The barrier isn't quite as good as metallised film, and they cost more. If sustainability is part of your brand, they're worth a quote.
Compostable bags are a different product again and aren't mylar. They also don't block smell or moisture for long, which makes them a poor fit for cannabis.
